Many thanks and good afternoon. Mexico augments its emergency plan and epidemiologic surveillance plan in the face of the swine flu virus. Yesterday an extraordinary conference was carried out of the National Council on Health where we counted on the secretaries of health of 32 federal entities, as well as all the sanitation representatives of all the healthcare institutions in the country. Mexico’s President, Felipe Calderon was present at this meeting and encouraged all the members of the national healthcare system to actively and responsibly participate in manner in this epidemiological alert and in their vigilance to ensure that our government is implementing all possible strategies in ending this epidemic.
The World Health Organization via diverse communication methods, has observed the opportunity and the assertiveness of the steps taken by the Mexican Government to prevent and control the epidemic.
We are counting on the technical cooperation and support of international organizations linked to the World Health Organization and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. At the same in Mexico, we are utilizing reference laboratories and organizing level three confirmatory biosecurity diagnostics.
All of you have been able to appreciate, that one of the highest priorities has been preventing at all cost, new cases given the highly contagious nature of the virus and we are acting in accordance with international protocols and recommendations from the World Health Organization.
Our president emphasized an important aspect yesterday. We are confronting a curable disease and thanks to the management and support of diverse organizations, Mexico already has a sufficient reserve of medications.
In accordance with the diagnostic confirmation strategy, since the identification of the first case until today, we have completed 2,373 laboratory tests. Of those, there has been detected 172 cases of the virus. This includes the less serious cases.
Yesterday a request was emphasized to all the secretaries of state, and that was to continue to share information among institutions. This has permitted us to have such good results today, despite the fact that the number of cases are and they evidently cannot respond to all the cases of influenza given that the serious cases and those that are hospitalized are sent to the central sector. Today we were informed 1,995 people have been hospitalized due to serious flu related symptoms throughout the country. Of those, 776 patients remain hospitalized; 1070 patients were released, which is approximately 56.3 % of the cases. Unfortunately, 149 people have died.
